Serena Simonsen

Serena Bennett Simonsen, the youngest daughter of the late Chief Gilmer Bennett, was raised with a deep appreciation for nature, history, tradition, and service to others. She considers her greatest accomplishment to be her family. Serena has been married for 41 years, including 23 years as a devoted military spouse. She is the proud mother of three children and grandmother of five grandchildren, who continue to be a constant source of joy and inspiration in her life.

Throughout her life, Serena has dedicated countless hours to volunteer service. Her contributions have included supporting military-base communities, volunteering at a post office where she earned Volunteer of the Quarter recognition, coaching Odyssey of the Mind teams, teaching catechism in the Catholic Church, working as a preschool teacher and aide, assisting with school banking programs and disaster preparedness initiatives, and serving as a Girl Scout troop leader.

Committed to preserving her Native heritage and traditions, Serena actively shares the history of the Apalachee Tribe and helps foster connections across generations. She previously served as Treasurer of the Apalachee Tribe and currently serves on the Tribal Council.

Serena was honored to testify during the canonization cause of Antonio Cuipa, one of the Martyrs of La Florida whose cause for sainthood is being advanced within the Catholic Church. Her participation reflected her commitment to preserving historical memory and sharing stories that continue to inspire others.

An avid quilter and painter, Serena enjoys sharing her creativity with others. She is also a passionate advocate for animal welfare and the proud owner of three rescue dogs. Through her faith, service, creativity, and devotion to family, Serena continues to honor her Tribal heritage and inspire those around her.
